Search Ads put your business in front of people who are actively searching for exactly what you offer. For lead generation businesses - trades, professionals, service providers - this is the most direct paid channel available. Someone typing "emergency plumber Sydney" or "Google Ads agency Australia" is not browsing. They need someone now.

Unlike social media ads where you're interrupting someone's feed, Search Ads reach people at the moment of intent. That's why conversion rates on Search are consistently higher than any other paid channel.

What You Need Before Starting

  • A Google Ads account with billing set up
  • Conversion tracking - phone calls, form submissions or both. This is non-negotiable.
  • A landing page that matches your ad message - not just your homepage
  • A budget of at least $30 to $50 per day to get enough data to optimise

Most important first step: set up conversion tracking before you spend a single dollar. Without it, you're flying blind. Google Ads conversion tracking for phone calls and form fills takes about 20 minutes to set up and makes everything else measurable.

Step 1 - Campaign Structure

For most lead generation businesses starting out, one campaign with two to three ad groups is enough. Segment your ad groups by service type or location - not by keyword match type as Google used to recommend.

1

One Campaign Per Core Service

If you offer multiple services, give each one its own campaign so you can control budget separately. A plumber running emergency callouts and bathroom renovations should have separate campaigns - they have different margins and different customer urgency.

2

Ad Groups by Theme

Within each campaign, create ad groups around tight keyword themes. Each ad group should have 5 to 15 closely related keywords and ads that specifically mention those terms.

Step 2 - Keyword Strategy

For lead generation, focus on high-intent keywords - terms that signal someone is ready to hire or buy, not just researching.

  • Service + location: "plumber Sydney", "Google Ads agency Melbourne"
  • Service + intent: "hire a plumber", "book a consultation"
  • Problem + service: "leaking pipe fix", "Google Ads not working"

Use broad match sparingly - it gives Google too much freedom early on. Start with phrase match and exact match, then expand once you have conversion data.

Negative keywords matter as much as keywords. Add irrelevant terms before you launch - "free", "DIY", "jobs", "course", "training". These will save significant budget from day one.

Step 3 - Writing Your Ads

Every ad should have three things: the keyword in the headline, a clear benefit, and a strong call to action. For lead generation, urgency works - "Get a Free Quote Today" outperforms "Learn More" consistently.

  • Headline 1 - include the main keyword
  • Headline 2 - your key differentiator (Google Partner, Same Day Service, No Call Out Fee)
  • Headline 3 - call to action (Book a Free Consult, Get a Quote Today)
  • Description - expand on the benefit and reinforce the CTA

Step 4 - Conversion Tracking

Set up at minimum two conversion actions:

  • Form submission - fires when someone submits your contact form
  • Phone call from ads - Google's call tracking number, counts calls over 60 seconds

If you have Google Tag Manager installed, both of these take about 20 minutes to set up. If you don't have GTM, this is the single best investment you can make before running any paid ads.

Step 5 - Bidding Strategy

  • Start with Maximise Clicks with a max CPC cap while you gather data
  • Switch to Target CPA once you have 30+ conversions - tell Google what you're willing to pay per lead
  • Avoid Target Impression Share for lead gen - it optimises for visibility not leads

Optimising for More Leads

  • Search terms report weekly - add new negatives, find new keyword opportunities
  • Ad schedule - run ads when your business can actually answer the phone or respond to enquiries
  • Location targeting - tighten to your actual service area. Paying for clicks from 100km away is wasted spend.
  • Landing page testing - the page people land on matters as much as the ad. Test different headlines and CTAs.
  • Quality Score - aim for 7 out of 10 or above. Higher Quality Score means lower CPCs.
